EATON - UK Power Networks Places Orders Worth €5 Million With Eaton

Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton has announced that it has won two major orders for medium-voltage switchgear from UK Power Networks, one of the UK’s largest and most successful distribution network operators (DNOs). The orders, which were placed under a recently extended framework agreement between Eaton and UK Power Networks, cover more than 130 bays of Eaton’s MMS-series dual-busbar MV vacuum switchgear, and have a total value in excess of €5 million. All of the equipment is scheduled for delivery and installation by the end of 2014.

David McCabe, Manager of Eaton’s Electrical Systems and Solutions (ESS) division in the UK explains the agreement further: “The new equipment is being installed at two major 132/11 kV distribution substations in central London, one at St Pancras Station, the other in the Whitechapel area. In both cases, the existing substations are being upgraded to cope with growth in demand which will subsequently help to reinforce the London network and its resilience.”

At St Pancras, 62 bays of MMS vacuum switchgear are to be installed in a new switch house. According to Lucio Polito, UK Power Networks’ project manager at St Pancras: “The compact construction of Eaton’s MMS switchgear makes it an ideal choice for this project, as the space available in the new switch house is restricted by the constraints of the site.”

As an adjunct to the main project at St Pancras, Eaton is supplying six bays of MMS switchgear which will be temporarily installed at the adjacent Brill Place substation to provide urgently needed supplies for a major energy user on the site. When the main project is complete, these six bays of switchgear will be relocated to the main St Pancras substation, where they will provide spare capacity to cope with future growth in demand.

In Whitechapel, the Eaton MMS installation will comprise 69 bays of switchgear configured as three separate boards, each fed by a different 132/11 kV transformer. The boards, which are on two floors of the building, will be linked with Eaton insulated busbar connectors.
