Vattenfall builds new heat grid in The Netherlands
Vattenfall in the Netherlands (Nuon) has decided to invest 82 million Euros in a new heat grid. The new grid will make use of residual heat from waste disposal and be able to heat 14.000 households and businesses.
The building of the new heat grid is lead by the municipality of Nijmegen that plans to construct a new heat grid together with four partners. Vattenfall is one of these partners and our part involves an investment of 82 million Euros.
Vattenfall already has 3,000 heat customers in this area. The new grid will use residual heat from a local waste disposal plant, Afvalwerking Regio Nijmegen (ARN), to heat another 14,000 households and businesses in the area. Vattenfall will build the heat distribution network in the district and also take care of billing e.g. between the ARN and customers.
The Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation has provided 2.5 million Euros. The new heat grid will entail 70% less CO2 emissions compared to heating by gas boilers. It will go into operation in 2015.
