City of Hanoi Selects Echelon and ElcomTek
to Deploy Vietnam's First Smart City Street Light Control System

Powered by the Echelon Energy Control Networking Platform, the Smart Street Lighting System Will Reduce Energy Consumption and Generate Significant Operational Savings

Echelon Corporation and Elcom Technologies Corporation (ElcomTek), a leading systems integrator in Vietnam, announced they will deploy an energy control networking system for the city of Hanoi that will serve as the foundation for the country's first smart street lighting system. The city of Hanoi's new street lighting system will be comprised of Echelon's segment controllers running its Control Operating System (COS) and ElcomTek's energy management software to initially control 28,000 streetlights and help reduce energy consumption. The project is anticipated to be completed in March and represents around 25% of all the street lights in Hanoi.

“Vietnam has a very promising emerging economy. Its government is focused on creating sustainable long-term energy efficiency solutions, including building a new public lighting infrastructure, to handle the country's rapid economic growth," said Nguyen Dang Dzung director at ElcomTek. “The Echelon energy control networking platform is the only solution that we've found that is truly open and interoperable with most luminaire providers, which will allow us to add intelligent individual lamp solutions and advanced monitoring and control as needed for the City. We are looking forward to this initial deployment in Vietnam and continued work with Echelon."

"We are excited to be working with ElcomTek and the City of Hanoi to build their first smart street lighting system with our energy control networking platform," said Michael Anderson, senior vice president of Worldwide Markets at Echelon. "Our proven, open-standard, and multi-application platform will enable Hanoi to quickly and safely build a best-in-class energy infrastructure that can easily scale from a city to a nationwide deployment. Our smart street lighting solution offers the most flexibility in choosing vendors, adding new technology, and creating new applications and services."

The fast urbanization and modernization process in Vietnam has promoted the increased energy demand for industries and means of transport, and at the same time, strengthened the demand for modern types of energy in cities. These factors have led to the fact that the demand for energy use in Vietnam is increasing faster than its economic growth rate - energy demand in Vietnam is expected to triple over the next decade. Vietnam's government has issued legislation and regulations to reduce the pressure on energy supply, demanding energy efficiency and conservation in the various energy consuming sectors, such as street lighting. Under Vietnam's Energy Efficiency Public Lighting project (VEEPL), the country has begun to replace all streetlights from mercury-vapor lamps to energy efficient, high-pressure sodium and compact fluorescent lighting, and will manage the new street lighting system with the Echelon and ElcomTek energy control networking platform.

In this initial deployment, ElcomTek's energy management software will communicate with Echelon's segment controllers running Echelon's Control Operating System (COS). ElcomTek’s software will execute local streetlight control decisions at the edge of the grid. ElcomTek's management software running in the data center will provide the policy setting and visualization environment. Overall, the system will monitor energy consumption, improve public safety and save energy by adjusting lighting schedules each day to allow for season changes. As a result, Vietnam will have its first network foundation for building out a nationwide smart street lighting system.
