Vattenfall - E-mobility news: Two-way communication between EV and charging infrastructure
 
The aim of this project was to study the increase in effectiveness of managed charging. One of the main results was the fact that the two-way communication between the electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure could be realized.

The Managed charging project was divided into five sub-projects, each dealing with different aspects of managed charging:
  • Wind-to-vehicle-to-grid (W2V2G)
  • User-friendliness
  • Charging Station V2.0 
  • Development of an integration IT platform
  • Field trial with BMW Active E
Two-way communication realized
One of the main results from this project was the fact that the developed two-way communication between the electric vehicles and the charging infrastructure could be realized, and thus create conditions to increase the correlation between EV charging and supply of wind power significantly.

The system analyses and solutions handled the power side with the wind-to-vehicle (W2V) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) applications, Local Load Management (LLM) and charging stations. The mobility side included an end-user value-added charging service, the so-called ‘charging assistant’, and the use of BMW Active E electric vehicle batteries as power storage for the network management function including the integration of wind power.

Power feedback depending on the user
The managed charging solution works as follows (see also figure above):

The EV battery charging and possible power feedback to the grid are depending on the user’s individual mobility need, wind power generation and network load. The batteries should be charged when a great amount of wind power is generated and the network load is low (W2V). Conversely, energy from the battery of the vehicle can be fed back into the grid when little wind power is generated, but there is a high network load (V2G).

Vattenfall’s participation within this project included the overall project coordination and focuses on the following content:
  • Development, deployment and operation of the smart charging infrastructure
  • Development and operation of an open, scalable and sustainable IT platform, including interfaces to any system
  • Establishment of a central data storage 
  • Test and evaluation and acceptance of systems 
  • Integration of the developed systems and applications 
  • Development and provision of the operational control centre 
  • Analysis and evaluation of the simulation from the perspective of the infrastructure
  • Coordinating the infrastructure side accompanying scientific research
