FORTUM - Smart grid
Fortum is currently developing the smart grid of the future. A smart grid makes it possible to use electricity efficiently in a totally new way and supports the transition towards climate-benign energy production.
Smart grid enables distributed energy production whereby consumers, for instance, can sell electricity they have produced back to the grid.
A smart grid also gives electricity users many more opportunities to influence their own energy consumption. In fact, tomorrow’s homes and electricity grid are so smart that they can adapt themselves to be energy efficient.
Electricity will replace oil also as an energy source for transportation, and recharging posts are part of the smart grid. Not only does a smart grid provide electricity for your car, it also tells you when it is the best time to fully recharge the batteries.
A smart grid gives real-time information about consumption to both the electricity producer and the consumer. The smart electricity meters currently being installed, the Fortum Älyboksi meters, will help consumers get accurate information about how their electricity bill is formulated because all bills are based on real-time consumption.
Smart electricity meters enable households to start using their own in-home display terminals, like the Fortum Kotinäyttö. In-home displays help consumers understand where electricity is being consumed and can thus identify the electricity hogs in the household.
